How do I calculate the efficiency of a solar panel?+
Divide the rated wattage by the panel area in square metres times 1000, then multiply by 100. A 550W panel measuring 2.28 × 1.13 m (2.58 sq. m.) works out to 21.3% efficient. The calculator above does this instantly.
What is a good solar panel efficiency in 2026?+
20 to 22% is the mainstream band for new residential modules. Anything above 22% is premium territory; below 18% indicates older technology that needs noticeably more roof area per kW.
Does higher efficiency mean more electricity?+
Per square metre, yes. Per rated watt, no: a 550W panel produces the same energy whether it is 19% or 22% efficient. Efficiency matters when roof space is the constraint, not when comparing equal wattages.
Why is my panel producing less than its efficiency suggests?+
Efficiency is measured at lab conditions. Real rooftops add heat, dust, wiring and inverter losses totalling 15 to 25%, which is separate from module efficiency. Judge real output with a generation calculation, not the efficiency number.
Which is more efficient: mono or poly panels?+
Monocrystalline. Modern mono PERC and TOPCon modules deliver 19 to 22.5% versus 16 to 17.5% for polycrystalline. Poly has effectively exited the new-install market in India.
Do solar panels lose efficiency over time?+
Yes, about 0.5% of output per year for quality modules, with a slightly larger first-year drop. Manufacturers typically warrant 87 to 90% of rated output at year 25.
What is the most efficient solar panel type in 2026?+
Among shipping residential technologies, back-contact and HJT modules lead at 22 to 23.5% module efficiency, with mainstream TOPCon close behind at 21 to 22.5%. Anything above 22% counts as premium; records above 26% remain lab cells, not products.
Does panel efficiency matter if my roof is big?+
Much less. With ample space, price per watt, warranty and temperature coefficient decide value; a 20% and a 22% module of equal wattage generate the same energy. Efficiency becomes decisive only when area is the binding constraint.
What is the formula for solar cell efficiency?+
Efficiency = Pmax ÷ (E × A) × 100, where Pmax is the maximum power in watts, E is the irradiance (1,000 W/m² at standard test conditions) and A is the area in m². It works for a single cell, using the cell area, or a whole module, using the module area. Module efficiency is lower than cell efficiency because the frame and gaps between cells add area that produces nothing.
