Solar Panel Tilt Angle in India: City-Wise Guide

The best solar panel angle and direction for every major Indian city, how much seasonal adjustment is worth, and the mounting rules that protect your generation.

Face panels true south (azimuth 180°) and set the tilt close to your latitude, from the 10° minimum in Kerala to 30° and above in Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. Being within ±5° of the ideal angle costs less than 1% of yearly generation.

The Rule: Tilt Equals Latitude, Face True South

India lies entirely in the northern hemisphere, so fixed panels give their best annual output facing true south (azimuth 180°) at a tilt angle equal to the local latitude. Because the country spans about 8°N to 34°N, the right tilt ranges from near-flat in the deep south to steep in Kashmir. Two guardrails apply: never mount flatter than 10° (rain must clean the glass) and stay within ±5° of ideal, which costs under 1% of output.

Is Seasonal Adjustment Worth It?

Adjustable structures set latitude +15° in winter (October to February) and latitude −15° in summer (March to September). The annual gain is typically 4 to 8%. For a 3 kW home system that is roughly 150 to 300 extra units a year, which rarely justifies the costlier structure and the discipline of adjusting it twice a year. Fixed tilt at latitude is the sensible default for homes; seasonal mounting makes more sense for off-grid systems that are winter-critical.

How Much Does the Wrong Tilt Actually Cost?

Deviation From IdealAnnual Output LossOn a 3kW System
±5°under 1%~40 units/yr: ignore it
±10°2 – 3%~100 units/yr: minor
±15°4 – 6%~210 units/yr: worth fixing at install time
Laid flat (0°) at 20°N+8 – 12% + soiling~400+ units/yr and dirtier glass
Facing east or west instead of south10 – 15%~500 units/yr: the costliest common error

The pattern is forgiving near the ideal and punishing far from it: chase orientation before angle, and never pay for a custom structure to correct a few degrees.

Mounting Rules That Protect Output

  • Minimum 10° tilt so monsoon rain self-cleans the glass.
  • True south, not magnetic south: compass south is offset by up to a few degrees of magnetic declination; installers correct for it.
  • Row spacing: steeper tilts cast longer winter shadows, needing wider gaps between rows; this is why steep-tilt northern systems need slightly more roof per kW (check with the roof area calculator).
  • Wind loading: above ~25° tilt on high roofs, structures need engineering attention in cyclonic zones.

Tilt Angle in India: Reader Questions

What is the best solar panel angle for India overall?+
There is no single national angle: use your latitude. The practical range is 10° in Kerala to 34° in Kashmir, with most of central India between 17° and 27°. Facing true south matters as much as the tilt itself.
What angle should solar panels be in Delhi?+
Delhi sits at 28.6°N, so fix panels at about 29°, or adjust seasonally to 44° in winter and 14° in summer. Within ±5° of these values the output difference is under 1%.
Can I mount panels flat on my terrace?+
Avoid fully flat mounting. Below about 10° tilt, dust and rainwater pool on the glass and soiling losses climb steeply. Even in the deep south, use at least 10° with a south orientation.
How much output do I lose on an east or west facing roof?+
Roughly 10 to 15% annually compared with south facing at the same tilt. East-west split arrays are still common on constrained roofs and pair well with morning and evening consumption.
Do solar trackers make sense for homes in India?+
Rarely. Single-axis trackers add 15 to 25% output but cost more, need maintenance and suit ground mounts, not rooftops. Home budgets are almost always better spent on more panels at a fixed tilt.
What is the best solar panel angle in winter in India?+
Add 15° to your latitude: about 44° in Delhi, 42° in Jaipur, 38° in Kolkata, 34° in Mumbai and 28° in Chennai and Bengaluru. The steeper winter angle faces the lower winter sun. Fixed rooftop systems usually stay at the year-round angle, which is equal to the latitude.
