Solar Panel Wattage Calculator

Convert solar panel watts into real energy. Enter panel wattage and count to see daily and monthly kWh, or flip the mode to find how many watts (or kW) of solar panels you need for a target output.

Residential solar panels in India are now mostly 540 W to 620 W each, so 1 kW needs 2 panels. A 550 W panel produces about 2.1 units (kWh) a day at 4.8 sun hours, roughly 63 units a month. Watts of solar needed = daily units ÷ (sun hours × 0.8) × 1,000.

Watts, kW and kWh: Getting the Units Right

Watts (W) and kilowatts (kW) measure instantaneous power: what the panel can deliver at full sun. kWh (units) measure energy over time: what your meter counts. A 550W panel in a 4.8 sun-hour city produces about 550 × 4.8 × 0.8 ÷ 1000 = 2.1 units a day. When an installer quotes "watts", always convert to daily units for your city before comparing against your consumption, which is exactly what this solar watt calculator does.

Panel Watts, Array Watts and Inverter Watts Are Three Different Numbers

Most wattage confusion comes from mixing three figures. Panel watts (540 to 620W today) is one module's lab rating. Array watts is panel watts × count: the number this calculator converts to energy. Inverter watts caps instantaneous output and is deliberately set at or slightly below array watts. When an installer says "a 5 kW system", ask which of the three they mean; a "5 kW" quote with a 4 kW inverter and 9 panels is a very different product from 10 panels on a 5 kW inverter. Enter array watts here, and use real daily consumption (from the load calculator) when running "watts I need" mode.

Eight 550W Panels in Bengaluru

Eight 550W panels make a 4.4 kW array. In Bengaluru's 4.8 sun hours that yields about 16.9 units a day and 507 a month: enough for a home using 450 to 500 units. Flip the mode: a family targeting 12 units a day in the same city needs 12 ÷ (4.8 × 0.8) ≈ 3,150W, which the calculator rounds to 3,150W and 6 panels of 550W. Both directions use the same physics; the mode just decides which side of the equation you know.

Choosing a Panel Wattage When You Buy

  • Space-rich roofs: buy on price per watt. Six 550W panels and five-and-a-bit 620W panels make the same power; take whichever quote prices the watt cheaper with a solid warranty.
  • Space-tight roofs: buy the biggest watt available. Each wattage step up extracts more from the same footprint; verify the gain in the roof area calculator.
  • Match string voltages. All panels in a string should be the same model; mixing 540W and 620W drags every panel to the weaker spec.
  • Check the tolerance line. Good modules list positive-only tolerance (for example "+5W/-0W"), meaning you never receive below-rated glass.

Wattage Mix-Ups

  • Assuming watts scale with size linearly across brands-of-era. A physically larger old 400W panel can be less capable than a smaller modern 550W; compare watts and efficiency, not glass dimensions.
  • Confusing W with kWh. Watts are capability; kWh is delivery. A 550W panel delivers about 2.1 kWh a day, not 550 of anything.
  • Ignoring the temperature coefficient. Two 550W panels can differ 3 to 4% in real Indian heat if one loses 0.29%/°C and the other 0.40%/°C; the datasheet line matters more here than in Europe.
  • Sizing "watts I need" from a winter day. Use annual average daily consumption, or summer if you must err; a winter-sized array disappoints for half the year.

Watts to Units: The Conversion

Daily units = Total watts × Peak sun hours × 0.8 ÷ 1000
Watts needed = Target daily units × 1000 ÷ (Peak sun hours × 0.8)

Conversion settings

  • Performance ratio: 0.8, covering temperature, dust, wiring and inverter losses
  • Sun hours: your selected city's stored average
  • Rounding: wattage needed is rounded up to the next 50W step

Panel Wattage Questions

How many kWh does a 550 watt solar panel produce?+
About 2 to 2.3 units (kWh) a day in most Indian cities, or 60 to 68 units a month. In high-sun regions like Rajasthan it reaches 2.5 units a day; in hill or coastal regions it can dip below 2.
How many watts of solar do I need to run a house?+
A home using 10 units a day needs roughly 2,600 W (2.6 kW) of panels at 4.8 sun hours. Bigger AC-heavy homes using 20 units a day need around 5,200 W. Use the "Watts I need" mode above with your own daily units.
What is the highest wattage solar panel available?+
Residential modules top out around 620W in 2026, with commercial formats reaching 700W+. Higher wattage mainly means a physically larger or more efficient panel, so compare efficiency and warranty, not just the watt number.
Do panels ever produce their full rated wattage?+
Rarely. The rating is measured at lab conditions (1000 W/sq. m., 25°C cell temperature). On a real Indian roof, heat alone cuts output 8 to 12%, and dust and wiring take more, which is why calculations here apply a 0.8 performance ratio.
How many 550W panels make 5kW?+
Ten panels give 5.5 kW; nine give 4.95 kW. Installers usually round the array slightly above the inverter rating, so a "5 kW system" commonly carries 9 to 10 panels of 550W.
What wattage panel is best for a small roof?+
The highest wattage you can source, typically 600 to 620W. Fewer, bigger panels extract the most kW from limited area. Check the fit with the solar roof area calculator before ordering.
How many watts of solar do I need to run a refrigerator?+
A typical fridge consumes about 1.2 units a day, which needs roughly 300 to 350W of panels in most Indian cities. Running one through the night additionally needs about 1 kWh of battery; panels alone only power it while the sun shines.
Are 700W solar panels available for homes?+
Formats above 650W exist but are commercial-sized: physically too large and heavy for convenient rooftop handling. Residential installs in 2026 sensibly top out around 620W; more capacity comes from more panels, not bigger ones.
How many watts is one solar panel?+
Most residential panels sold in India in 2026 are 540 to 620 W. Smaller panels of 100 to 400 W are used for battery charging and small loads. A 1 kW system therefore uses 2 modern panels, or about 3 of the older 330 W panels.
How do I check the wattage of my solar panel?+
Look at the label on the back of the panel. The rated power is listed as Pmax or maximum power, in watts, along with Vmp (voltage) and Imp (current) at maximum power; Pmax equals Vmp × Imp. The same figures appear on the datasheet and should match your quote.
What is the size of a 550 watt solar panel?+
A typical 550 W module measures about 2.28 m × 1.13 m (roughly 7.5 × 3.7 ft), an area of about 2.6 sq. m. On a roof, plan 80 to 100 sq. ft. per kW including row spacing, so two 550 W panels need about 90 to 110 sq. ft.
