Solar Savings, Payback & ROI Calculator

Find out how much solar panels will really save you: monthly and yearly savings, the payback period (break even) on your investment, and the 25-year return on investment (ROI) with rising tariffs factored in.

A correctly sized rooftop system usually removes 80 to 95% of the electricity bill. A 3 kW system typically saves ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 a month, and most homes recover the cost in 3 to 6 years after the subsidy. Over 25 years, savings usually come to 8 to 14 times the net investment.

How Much Do Solar Panels Save Per Month in India?

Savings depend on your tariff and how much of your consumption the system covers. Typical results for on-grid systems sized to the bill, after subsidy:

Monthly BillTypical SystemMonthly SavingsTypical Payback
₹1,5001.5 – 2 kW₹1,200 – ₹1,5003 – 5 years
₹3,0003 – 3.5 kW₹2,500 – ₹3,0003 – 5 years
₹5,0005 – 6 kW₹4,200 – ₹5,0004 – 6 years
₹8,0008 – 10 kW₹6,800 – ₹8,0004 – 6 years

High-tariff states (Maharashtra, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh urban) save more per unit and pay back faster than low-tariff states. Check your bill impact in detail with the solar electricity bill calculator.

Solar Payback Period, Break Even & ROI Explained

Your payback period (break even point) is the net system cost divided by annual savings. With the subsidy, most Indian homes break even in 3 to 6 years. After that the system produces essentially free power for the rest of its 25-year life, and because grid tariffs rise about 5% a year while panels degrade only about 0.5% a year, your yearly savings actually grow after payback.

Return on investment (ROI) compares what the system saves over its life with what it cost: 25-year ROI = (total 25-year savings − net cost) ÷ net cost. Because savings keep growing with tariffs, total 25-year savings usually come to 8 to 14 times the net investment.

What Actually Drives Your Savings Number

Two systems of identical size can save very different amounts. Three levers control yours:

  • Your tariff. Savings are avoided purchases. A Mumbai home at ₹10 per unit saves nearly double a Jammu home at ₹4.5 for the same generation, which is why this tool loads your city's planning tariff instead of a national average.
  • Self-consumption share. Units used directly are worth your full tariff; exported units are valued at a conservative ₹3 here. Homes that run washing machines, pumps and water heating in daylight keep more value per unit generated.
  • System type. Batteries add cost but no savings, so hybrid systems always show longer payback than on-grid. Choose hybrid for outage protection, not for economics.

A ₹4,000 Bill in Jaipur

A Jaipur family paying ₹4,000 a month uses about 533 units at the city's ₹7.5 tariff. With Rajasthan's excellent 5.5 sun hours, the calculator recommends 4.5 kW generating around 594 units a month. Self-consuming 533 and exporting the rest yields savings of about ₹4,182 a month (₹50,184 a year). Against a net cost of ₹1.83 lakh after subsidy, the system breaks even in 3.6 years, then delivers two decades of essentially free power whose value grows as tariffs rise.

After the Estimate: Lock the Savings In

  • Shift discretionary loads to daylight. Timer the washing machine, water pump and geyser into the 10 am to 4 pm window; every unit moved from export to self-use is worth ₹4 to ₹7 extra.
  • Track generation monthly. Compare your inverter log against the generation calculator band for your city; a 15% shortfall means cleaning or a fault, and every lost unit is lost savings.
  • Clean on schedule. A monthly rinse protects 5 to 15% of output, the cheapest maintenance in home ownership.
  • Recheck after tariff orders. Annual DISCOM tariff hikes quietly raise your savings; the system gets more valuable every year it operates.

Savings Claims to Distrust

  • "Zero bill guaranteed". Fixed charges survive, and monsoon months import power. 80 to 95% reduction is the honest range.
  • Exports valued at retail tariff. Most DISCOMs settle surplus below retail rates. Projections that price every unit at ₹8+ inflate payback claims by a year or more.
  • Flat 25-year projections without degradation. Panels lose about 0.5% output yearly; honest models, including this one, factor it in.
  • Payback quoted on gross cost. Some sellers quote payback after subsidy but cost before it, or vice versa. Keep both on the same basis.

How Savings and Payback Are Projected

Monthly savings = Self-used units × Your tariff + Exported units × ₹3.00
Payback (years) = Net cost after subsidy ÷ Annual savings
25-yr savings = Σ Annual savings × (1.05)ʸ × (0.995)ʸ for y = 0…24

Projection settings

  • Self-consumption: valued at your city's planning tariff; exports at a conservative ₹3.00/unit proxy because net metering rates vary by DISCOM
  • Tariff escalation: ~5% per year; degradation: ~0.5% per year
  • System cost: ₹58,000/kW on-grid, ₹72,000/kW hybrid, less central and state subsidy
  • No financing cost: for a loan-funded system, compare EMI vs savings in the solar loan EMI calculator

Savings and ROI Questions

How much money do solar panels save per month?+
A correctly sized rooftop system typically wipes out 80 to 95% of your electricity bill. On a ₹3,000 monthly bill, expect savings of roughly ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 a month, or ₹30,000 to ₹36,000 a year, growing as tariffs rise.
What is the payback period for solar panels in India?+
With the central subsidy, most residential systems break even in 3 to 6 years. High-tariff states pay back fastest, sometimes under 4 years. After break even, the remaining 19 to 22 years of system life are essentially free electricity.
What is the ROI of a solar system over 25 years?+
Counting 5% yearly tariff escalation and 0.5% panel degradation, the 25-year savings usually come to 8 to 14 times the net investment. A system with a ₹1 lakh net cost commonly returns ₹8 to ₹14 lakh in avoided bills over its life, because tariffs nearly triple over that period.
Is solar worth it for a small ₹1,000 monthly bill?+
Usually yes, but the economics are tighter. A 1 kW system after the ₹30,000 subsidy costs about ₹22,200 to ₹33,800 and saves ₹800 to ₹1,000 a month, giving a payback of roughly 2 to 4 years. Below ₹800 a month, weigh it carefully.
Do savings drop during monsoon?+
Yes. Monsoon months generate 30 to 40% less than the annual average, while summer months generate more. The calculator uses annualised averages, so your yearly total should still land close to the estimate.
Does a battery improve my savings?+
No, a battery improves backup, not savings. It adds cost and small round-trip losses, which is why on-grid systems show the best payback. Choose hybrid only if power cuts genuinely disrupt your home.
How much does a 3kW solar system save per month?+
Typically ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 a month for a home that consumes most of the 330 to 390 units it generates, at tariffs of ₹7 to ₹8.5. High-tariff cities push it higher; heavy exporting pulls it lower because surplus earns only ₹3 or so per unit.
Do solar savings increase over time?+
Yes. Tariffs rise roughly 5% a year while panel output falls only 0.5%, so the rupee value of your generation climbs almost every year. A system saving ₹36,000 in year one commonly saves over ₹80,000 a year by year fifteen.
How do I calculate the ROI of solar panels?+
Add up the savings over the system's 25-year life, subtract the net cost after subsidy, and divide by the net cost. For payback, divide the net cost by the first year's savings. This calculator does both, with tariffs rising about 5% a year and panel output falling about 0.5% a year.
